My personal story of becoming a social worker
This is one story in a collection of stories from social workers to highlight why they chose to work in this field, how they entered the industry and what they enjoy most about the work they do.
Social workers are passionate and dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to help others. These stories provide a glimpse into the lives of Australian social workers.
Jodie’s story,
I've been a social worker for 15 years now. Unlike some, I didn't feel a calling to this profession. Back in high school, friends often came to my house when they needed space, but that's about it.
Initially, I aimed to become a teacher. When applying for university, teaching was my first choice, followed by nursing and social work.
I found out that somehow SATAC had duplicated my details which left me out when it came to putting my preferences through. They were unable to rectify the issue and told me I was only able to be accepted into my last choice. This mix-up with my application left me accepted into social work, my last preference.
Despite my disappointment, I accepted the offer, intending to switch to teaching later. However, after a year, I found myself loving every aspect of social work. Practical subjects like group work and interviews became my favourites.
During my studies, I worked in a school as a school service officer (SSO) and realised my passion for working with youth. Although becoming a school social worker wasn't common in South Australia then, I was fortunate to secure a spot for my first placement for my studies in a government school. Being among the first social work students placed in a school was exciting, despite the challenges of navigating a setting where staff had limited understanding of our role. Nonetheless, it was a rewarding experience overall.
My second placement, in a program for young mothers, was enlightening. I learned valuable skills in relationship building, communication, community development and applying social work theory to real-life situations.
Throughout my career, I've mainly worked in non-profit organisations supporting young people, often in school or educational settings. Despite 15 years passing, my passion for this work remains unchanged.
